A creamy, spicy, and cheesy buffalo chicken dip baked inside a hollowed-out sourdough bread bowl. Perfect for game days, parties, or any gathering where you want a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups cooked, shredded chicken (rotisserie chicken works great)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup buffalo hot sauce (Frank’s RedHot recommended)
  • 1/2 cup ranch dressing (or blue cheese dressing)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions (plus more for garnish)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large round sourdough bread loaf (about 1 lb)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (optional, for brushing)
  • Celery sticks, carrot sticks, crackers, tortilla chips, or extra bread pieces (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.
  2. Using a serrated knife, cut a circle about 2 inches from the edge of the top of the bread loaf. Carefully remove the top and set it aside. Hollow out the inside of the bread, leaving about a 1-inch thick wall all around. Reserve the bread pieces for dipping or toasting.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, buffalo hot sauce, ranch dressing, garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix until smooth and well combined.
  4. Fold in the shredded chicken, 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, the mozzarella cheese, and the chopped green onions. Stir until everything is evenly coated.
  5. Spoon the buffalo chicken mixture into the hollowed-out bread loaf. Pack it in gently but firmly. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese on top. If using, brush the melted butter over the outside of the bread bowl.
  6. Place the filled bread bowl on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the bread is golden brown. If the top browns too quickly, tent loosely with aluminum foil for the last 5-10 minutes.
  7. Let the bread bowl cool for 5 minutes before serving. Place the bread top alongside for dipping, or cut it into pieces. Serve with celery sticks, carrot sticks, crackers, or tortilla chips.

Notes

Soften cream cheese properly to avoid lumps. Don’t overfill the bread bowl; leave a little room at the top. Toast reserved bread pieces with olive oil and garlic powder for extra dippers. Make ahead: assemble filling and hollow out bread a day ahead; stuff and bake when ready.
