A bright and cozy blood orange sangria that came together by accident but became a Halloween favorite. Quick to make with simple ingredients, it’s perfect for fall gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3–4 large blood oranges
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry rosé wine
  • 1/4 cup brandy or orange liqueur
  • 1 cup ginger ale or sparkling water
  • 1 apple (Honeycrisp or Fuji), thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2–3 star anise pods
  • 1–2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash the blood oranges and apple. Slice the blood oranges into thin rounds (about 1/4-inch thick), then cut the rounds in half to make half-moons. Core the apple and slice into thin wedges (leave the skin on).
  2. In the bottom of a large pitcher, place 4-5 blood orange slices and gently muddle with the end of a wooden spoon to release juice and oils.
  3. Add the cinnamon stick and star anise pods to the pitcher.
  4. Pour the entire bottle of rosé wine into the pitcher, followed by the brandy (or orange liqueur) and ginger ale. Stir gently with a wooden spoon to combine.
  5. Gently add the remaining blood orange slices, apple wedges, and pomegranate seeds. Stir once more.
  6. Taste the sangria. If it needs sweetness, add 1-2 tablespoons of honey or maple syrup and stir until dissolved. If it needs more fizz, add a splash more ginger ale.
  7. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (overnight is better) to let the flavors meld.
  8. When ready to serve, stir gently. Pour into glasses, including some fruit in each glass. Add ice cubes if desired, or chill the glasses beforehand to avoid dilution.

Notes

For a mocktail, replace rosé with non-alcoholic sparkling wine or white grape juice and skip the brandy. For a spooky black sangria, use dry red wine instead of rosé. The sangria can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; fruit may become mushy after 24 hours. Do not reheat.
