Rich, fudgy chocolate cookies shaped like spiders with crunchy pretzel legs and candy eyes. A fun and easy Halloween treat that’s as delicious as it is festive.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
  • About 48 mini pretzel twists
  • About 24 pairs candy eyes

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes with a hand mixer on medium speed.
  3. Add egg and vanilla extract; beat until fully combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Fold in mini chocolate chips with a spatula.
  7. Chill dough for 15 minutes.
  8. Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough (about 1.5 tablespoons each) onto prepared baking sheets, spacing 2 inches apart.
  9. Press 4 mini pretzel twists into each side of each dough ball, angling them slightly outward to resemble spider legs.
  10. Bake one sheet at a time on center rack for 10-12 minutes (10 for softer, 12 for firmer).
  11. Immediately after removing from oven, press two candy eyes into the top of each cookie.
  12. Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Do not skip chilling the dough; it prevents excessive spreading. Press pretzels in at an angle for a more dynamic spider look. Add candy eyes immediately after baking while cookies are still warm. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Freeze unbaked dough balls (without pretzels and eyes) for up to 3 months.
