Ingredients

Scale
  • 1216 ounces assorted cheeses (cheddar, gouda, brie)
  • 810 ounces salami or prosciutto
  • 1 cup assorted olives (black and green)
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes
  • 1 cup grapes (red and green)
  • 1 cup crackers or crostini
  • 1/2 cup nuts (almonds, walnuts, or pecans)
  • 1/2 cup dried fruit (apricots, cranberries, or figs)
  • 1/4 cup black sesame seeds or poppy seeds
  • 1/4 cup white sesame seeds
  • 810 large pitted black olives
  • 1620 thin pretzel sticks or chive pieces
  • Small dollops of cream cheese or goat cheese
  • Optional: Halloween-shaped cookie cutters, edible glitter, fresh herbs

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Board: Select a large board or platter (at least 12×18 inches). Line with parchment paper if desired. Place small bowls for seeds and dips slightly off-center.
  2. Create the Spiderweb Pattern: Using black sesame seeds or poppy seeds, create a spiral pattern starting from the center. Draw lines radiating outward like spokes, then connect with curved lines. Fill gaps with white sesame seeds for contrast. The web should be 8-10 inches in diameter.
  3. Arrange the Cheeses: Cut firm cheeses into cubes, slices, or Halloween shapes. Place around the spiderweb, grouping similar cheeses. Place soft cheese like brie near the center; optionally score the top in a spiderweb pattern.
  4. Add the Meats: Roll salami slices into roses (overlap three slices, fold in half, roll tightly) or fold prosciutto into loose folds. Space evenly around the board.
  5. Place the Fruits and Vegetables: Scatter cherry tomatoes, grapes, olives, and dried fruit in visual clusters. Leave space for crackers and nuts.
  6. Add the Crackers and Nuts: Fill remaining gaps with crackers in small stacks or fans and nuts scattered around edges.
  7. Create the Spiders: Cut a small slit in each large black olive. Insert a tiny dollop of cream cheese or goat cheese into the slit. For each spider, insert 4 pretzel stick halves or 2-inch chive pieces on each side, angling downward. Place 4-5 spiders on the spiderweb pattern.
  8. Final Adjustments: Step back and fill any empty spots with extra crackers or nuts. Adjust spider positions. Add fresh herbs for color if desired.

Notes

Assemble no more than 2 hours before serving to keep crackers crisp. Use just a tiny dab of cream cheese to hold spider legs. For a perfect spiderweb, draw it on parchment paper first. Take cheeses and meats out of refrigerator 30 minutes before serving. Leftovers can be stored separately for up to 3 days.
