This Easy Pumpkin Dump Cake with Cake Mix Topping is a simple, 4-ingredient fall dessert that combines a creamy, spiced pumpkin filling with a buttery, crunchy cake mix topping. It’s perfect for potlucks, Thanksgiving, or cozy weeknight cravings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz) pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice (optional, if pumpkin puree is unspiced)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the pumpkin puree and evaporated milk until smooth. If using unspiced pumpkin puree, whisk in 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice.
  3. Pour the pumpkin mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly across the bottom with a spatula.
  4. Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the pumpkin layer. Do not mix it in.
  5. Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the cake mix, covering as much surface area as possible.
  6. If using, sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts over the top.
  7. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbling. If the top browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil for the last 10 minutes.
  8. Let the cake cool for at least 15-20 minutes before serving. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Don’t skip the melted butter; it creates the golden crust. Let the cake rest before cutting to allow the filling to set. For a gluten-free version, use a gluten-free yellow cake mix. For extra flavor, try a spice cake mix instead of yellow.
