This easy pumpkin dump cake is a simple, 4-ingredient dessert that combines a creamy pumpkin custard layer with a buttery, crunchy cake mix topping. Perfect for fall gatherings, it’s a forgiving recipe that requires no mixing bowls and delivers incredible flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz) pumpkin puree
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the pumpkin puree and evaporated milk. Whisk until smooth. If using pumpkin pie spice, stir it in now.
  3. Pour the pumpkin mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly with a spatula.
  4. Sprinkle the entire box of yellow cake mix evenly over the pumpkin mixture. Do not stir.
  5. Drizzle the melted butter over the cake mix in a zigzag pattern. Gently tilt the pan to help it spread evenly.
  6. If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts on top.
  7. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbly. The center may still jiggle slightly.
  8. Let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

Don’t stir the layers. The whole point of a dump cake is that you pour the pumpkin mixture in the pan, sprinkle the dry cake mix on top, and then drizzle the melted butter over the cake mix. Stirring ruins the texture. Let it cool completely if you want clean slices. The flavors deepen after a day in the fridge.
