Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups broccoli florets (fresh)
  • 2 cups cauliflower florets (fresh)
  • 4 medium carrots (peeled and cut into 3-inch sticks)
  • 1 large cucumber (sliced into rounds, then halved)
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes (mixed colors)
  • 4 celery stalks (cut into 3-inch sticks)
  • 2 bell peppers (one orange, one yellow, sliced into thin strips)
  • 1 cup snow peas (trimmed)
  • ½ cup black olives (optional)
  • 1 cup sour cream (full-fat recommended)
  • ½ cup mayonnaise (Hellmann’s or Duke’s recommended)
  • ¼ cup buttermilk (or regular milk plus 1 teaspoon lemon juice)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh dill (chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives (chopped)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper (freshly ground)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (optional, for extra brightness)

Instructions

  1. Make the ranch dip first: Combine sour cream, mayonnaise, and buttermilk in a small bowl. Whisk until smooth. Add fresh dill, chives, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Stir well, taste, and adjust seasoning. Add optional lemon juice if desired. Cover and refrigerate while prepping vegetables.
  2. Prep all vegetables: Wash thoroughly. Cut broccoli and cauliflower into bite-sized florets. Peel carrots and cut into even 3-inch sticks. Slice cucumber into rounds, then halve each round. Halve cherry tomatoes if large. Cut celery into 3-inch sticks. Slice bell peppers into thin strips (about ¼ inch wide). Trim snow peas and remove strings.
  3. Arrange the spider web base: Place the small dip bowl in the very center of a large round platter. Ensure it is stable.
  4. Create the web spokes: Starting from the dip bowl and working outward, place lines of vegetables (carrot sticks, celery sticks, and bell pepper strips) that radiate like spokes on a wheel. Space them evenly, aiming for 8 to 12 spokes. Alternate colors for maximum visual impact.
  5. Build the concentric circles: Place vegetables in circles that get progressively larger as they move outward from the dip bowl. Start with a ring of cherry tomatoes about 2 inches from the bowl, then a ring of cucumber halves, then broccoli florets, then cauliflower, then snow peas. Continue until you reach the edge of the platter. Vegetables should rest on top of the spokes.
  6. Fill in the gaps: Identify any bare spots and fill them with smaller pieces of vegetables or extra florets. Aim for a dense, full-looking tray.
  7. Add finishing touches: Place a plastic spider on the edge of the dip bowl or crawling across a web spoke. Scatter black olives around the platter to look like tiny spiders. Adjust to ensure the pattern is visible and colors are balanced.
  8. Fill the dip bowl: Spoon the chilled ranch dip into the small bowl in the center. Smooth the top. Optionally, sprinkle extra fresh dill or a pinch of paprika on top for color.

Notes

Blot vegetables dry after washing to prevent the pattern from sliding. Cut vegetables to similar sizes for a professional look. Build the web from the center out for even spacing. Make extra dip as it goes quickly. Use a damp paper towel under the dip bowl to keep it stable. For best results, make the dip the night before and chop vegetables a few hours ahead; assembly takes less than 10 minutes.
