A fun and festive Halloween cheese ball shaped like a spider, made with cream cheese, sharp cheddar, and pretzel legs. It’s a crowd-pleasing, no-bake appetizer that kids and adults love, perfect for parties and classroom celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 24 pretzel sticks (thin, crispy kind)
  • 2 black olives, pitted
  • 1 tablespoon cream cheese (for attaching eyes)
  • Optional: red bell pepper strips (for spider smile)
  • Assorted crackers (for serving)
  • Vegetable sticks (carrot, celery, cucumber, for serving)
  • Pretzel chips (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Soften the cream cheese: Take cream cheese out of fridge at least 30 minutes before starting. If in a hurry, microwave in 10-second bursts until soft but not runny.
  2. Mix the base ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, sour cream, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and Worcestershire sauce. Beat with a hand mixer on medium speed until smooth and well combined, about 2-3 minutes. Scrape down sides of bowl halfway through.
  3. Check consistency: Mixture should be thick and creamy. If too dry, add another tablespoon of sour cream. If too soft, it will firm up in the fridge.
  4. Shape the cheese ball: Scoop mixture onto a large piece of plastic wrap. Form into a round ball shape. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and twist ends to secure.
  5. Chill for at least 2 hours: Place wrapped cheese ball in refrigerator. For best results, chill overnight.
  6. Unwrap and shape again: Once firm, unwrap and place on serving plate. Gently reshape into a smooth, round ball using hands to smooth any cracks.
  7. Insert the pretzel legs: Take 12 pretzel sticks and gently press them into the cheese ball, spacing evenly around sides, inserting about halfway. Angle slightly to look like spider legs. Repeat with remaining 12 pretzel sticks, placing just above the first set.
  8. Create the spider body: Slice one black olive in half lengthwise. Place one half on top of cheese ball for spider body. Use a small dab of cream cheese to help it stick if needed.
  9. Add the eyes: Slice the second olive into rounds. Place two rounds on front of spider body. Add tiny dabs of cream cheese in center of each olive round for the ‘white’ of the eye. Optionally, use a tiny piece of black olive for the pupil.
  10. Final chill: Return to fridge for 15-20 minutes before serving to help everything set and prevent pretzels from falling out.

Notes

For best results, chill the cheese ball overnight. Add pretzel legs within an hour of serving to keep them crunchy. Shred your own cheddar cheese for smoother texture. If bringing to a party, assemble at home except for pretzel legs; add them just before serving.
