Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz (60 ml) silver tequila
  • 4 oz (120 ml) fresh apple cider
  • 1 oz (30 ml) fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz (15 ml) cinnamon simple syrup (optional, or substitute with maple syrup or agave nectar)
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Ice (large cubes preferred)
  • 1 tbsp coarse salt (for rim)
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar (for rim)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (for rim)
  • Cinnamon stick (for garnish)
  • Apple slice (for garnish, Honeycrisp or Fuji recommended)
  • For Cinnamon Simple Syrup (optional): 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar, 1 cup (240 ml) water, 3-4 cinnamon sticks

Instructions

  1. Make the cinnamon simple syrup (if using): In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, and 3-4 cinnamon sticks. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves completely (about 3-4 minutes). Remove from heat and let steep for 30 minutes. Remove cinnamon sticks and let cool completely. Store in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to two weeks.
  2. Prepare the rim: On a small plate, mix 1 tablespoon coarse salt, 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Rub a lime wedge around the rim of your glass, then dip the rim into the salt-sugar mixture, twisting gently to coat evenly. Set the glass aside.
  3. Fill the glass with ice: Add a handful of large ice cubes to your prepared glass.
  4. Combine the ingredients in a shaker: Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Add 2 oz silver tequila, 4 oz fresh apple cider, 1 oz fresh lime juice, 1/2 oz cinnamon simple syrup (or maple syrup), and 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon. If skipping the syrup, add an extra 1/2 oz of maple syrup or agave.
  5. Shake vigorously: Secure the lid on your shaker and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until the shaker feels frosty.
  6. Strain into the prepared glass: Hold a fine-mesh strainer over your ice-filled glass and pour the margarita through it.
  7. Garnish and serve: Slide a thin apple slice onto the rim of the glass and tuck a cinnamon stick into the drink. For an extra touch, dust a tiny pinch of cinnamon over the top. Serve immediately.

Notes

For a crowd, batch the margarita mix (minus ice) in a pitcher: combine 2 cups tequila, 4 cups apple cider, 1 cup lime juice, and 1/2 cup cinnamon simple syrup. Refrigerate until ready to serve, then shake individual portions with ice. Adjust sweetness to taste based on your apple cider’s sweetness. Fresh lime juice is essential for best flavor.
