Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups (312 g) all-purpose flour, sifted
  • ¼ cup (25 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups (400 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (240 ml) vegetable oil
  • 1 cup (240 ml) buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon black gel food coloring
  • 8 ounces (227 g) cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup (113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups (240 g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange zest
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup (90 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) heavy cream
  • A few drops black gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans or line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk sugar and vegetable oil. Add eggs, buttermilk, vanilla extract, and vinegar; mix until combined.
  4. Gradually stir in black gel food coloring until batter is deep black and glossy.
  5. Slowly add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing on low speed just until incorporated. Avoid overmixing.
  6. Divide batter evenly between pans and bake 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely (at least 30 minutes).
  8. For the filling, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, then mix in orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla extract until fluffy and bright orange.
  9. Prepare ganache by heating heavy cream until simmering, pour over chocolate chips, let sit 1 minute, then stir until smooth. Add black gel food coloring to deepen color.
  10. Assemble cake by placing one layer on plate, spreading a thick layer of orange cream cheese filling, topping with second layer, and pressing gently.
  11. Frost top and sides lightly with remaining filling or a thin layer of ganache.
  12. Fill a piping bag or plastic bag with ganache. Pipe concentric circles on cake top, then drag a toothpick from center outward to create spider web design.
  13. Chill cake for at least 1 hour before serving to set ganache and meld flavors.

Notes

Use gel food coloring for deep black color without watering down batter. Soften cream cheese and butter to avoid lumps in filling. Practice spider web piping on parchment paper if nervous. Chill cake before decorating and serving for best results. Variations include gluten-free flour, dairy-free substitutes, and flavor twists like espresso powder or lemon zest.
