These spooky dirt cups with gummy worms are a quick and easy Halloween treat that kids and adults love. With creamy chocolate pudding, crunchy cookie ‘dirt,’ and wriggly gummy worms, they’re perfect for parties and require only 15 minutes of active prep time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box (3.9 ounces) instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 20 chocolate sandwich cookies (like Oreos)
  • 1 cup gummy worms
  • 8 ounces Cool Whip or whipped topping, thawed
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: extra crushed cookies, additional gummy worms, green-tinted coconut flakes for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the chocolate pudding mix and 2 cups of cold milk. Whisk for about 2 minutes until it starts to thicken. Set aside for 5 minutes to set up completely.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with an electric hand mixer until smooth and fluffy, about 1 minute. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, then beat for another 30 seconds until well combined.
  3. Gently fold the cream cheese mixture into the pudding using a spatula until uniform. Then fold in the thawed Cool Whip until light, airy, and a beautiful chocolate brown color.
  4. Place the chocolate sandwich cookies in a food processor and pulse until they resemble coarse sand. Set aside about 1/4 cup of the finer crumbs for topping.
  5. Assemble the dirt cups: Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the pudding mixture into the bottom of each clear cup. Add a layer of crushed cookies (about 1½ tablespoons). Press a couple of gummy worms into the pudding layer. Repeat layers: pudding, cookies, more gummy worms. End with a final layer of crushed cookies on top.
  6. Sprinkle reserved fine cookie crumbs over the top. Stick a few more gummy worms into the top layer, letting them dangle over the edge. If using, sprinkle green coconut ‘moss’ around the base of the worms.
  7. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow flavors to meld and pudding to set fully.

Notes

For best results, ensure cream cheese is fully softened to avoid lumps. Do not overmix the pudding. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free cookies and pudding mix. Gummy worms can bleed color if left in pudding for more than 24 hours; add them just before serving if making ahead. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
