Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large round sourdough bread loaf (about 1.5 lbs)
  • 2 cups cooked, shredded chicken
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup buffalo hot sauce (e.g., Frank’s RedHot)
  • 1/2 cup ranch dressing
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the bread bowl: Using a serrated knife, slice off the top quarter of the bread loaf. Set the top aside. Gently pull out the soft bread from the inside, leaving about a 1/2-inch thick shell. Tear the removed bread into bite-sized pieces and place on a baking sheet.
  3. Make the dip mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, buffalo hot sauce, and ranch dressing. Mix until smooth.
  4. Add the chicken and cheese: Fold in the shredded chicken, 3/4 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese, and the crumbled blue cheese (if using). Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir until evenly coated.
  5. Stuff the bread bowl: Spoon the buffalo chicken mixture into the hollowed-out bread loaf. Top with the remaining 1/4 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
  6. Brush with butter: Using a pastry brush, coat the exposed bread edges and the inside rim of the loaf with the melted butter.
  7. Bake: Place the stuffed bread bowl on a baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and the bread is golden brown. If the top browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil for the last 10 minutes. While it bakes, toast the reserved bread pieces on a separate baking sheet for 8-10 minutes, until crisp.
  8. Garnish and serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes. Sprinkle with chopped green onions. Place the bread bowl on a large platter surrounded by the toasted bread pieces and any extra dippers like celery sticks or tortilla chips.

Notes

Use room temperature cream cheese for smooth blending. Toast the bread pieces for dipping to prevent sogginess. For a lighter option, substitute Greek yogurt for ranch dressing. Double the recipe for larger crowds.
